Geek Girls Carrots empowers female coders with Flowroute

Posted on April 30, 2015 by

Geek Girls Carrots (GGC), a social enterprise dedicated to increasing the number of women in technology industries, is hosting its 2nd Code Carrots Project Cycle at Flowroute headquarters in Seattle. For 6 weeks, participants meet Tuesday to work on a unique coding project that ends in a Demo Day showcase. The Project Cycle initiative is unique to Geek Girls Carrots – Seattle, and is an opportunity for women to take coding and programming out of the abstract, and apply their skills to real world projects.

Ready for the working world

Geek Girls Carrots knows that learning through study is one thing, while the experience of doing builds applicable skills. Rather than learning code theory in a classroom, participants develop real life skills, such as team, time, and project management, and learn how to navigate team dynamics in a realistic setting. Teams are mentored by industry professionals, willing to lend insight, expertise, and support.

Working to support women in tech

Geek Girls Carrots has more planned–the Code Carrots Project Cycle is just the first step. GGC has a mission and a goal: Increase the number of women working in IT, by proving that the only thing which truly stands between a woman and technology is herself. The organization wants to help women throughout the entire process, from learning how to code and program, to using these languages in a real life project-based setting, and even finding jobs, and improving interviewing skills. The question is always, “How do we keep improving our organization, and the women we serve?”

Support Geek Girls Carrots

The culmination of this Code Carrots Project Cycle is Demo Day, which will be held on Tuesday, May 26 from 6:00-8:30pm at Impact Hub, 220 2nd Ave. S. Seattle, WA 98104. Geek Girls Carrots is also working with other female friendly tech groups to host the ACT-W (Advancing the Careers of Technical Women) Seattle conference aimed towards helping women in technological industries. We’re proud to support their efforts to create a more open and equal industry.
