Attack of the DDoS
As you probably noticed when you tried to check your Twitter feed this morning, there are widespread internet issues due to ongoing DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks against the DNS provider Dyn. This means that if you use this provider for your website or service you are also likely experiencing problems accessing many of your favorite sites, including your own.
What’s a DDoS attack you ask?
A DDoS attack happens when a flood of bogus traffic is sent at a specific target with the hope of pushing that target offline. This attack is on the public DNS provider Dyn, who provides infrastructure services to a variety of major brands, which is why the attack is causing issues for many different services around the internet.
Will your Flowroute service be impacted?
DDoS attacks such as this one will not take out your calling or messaging service because our carrier routing doesn’t rely on DNS, but any customers using impacted DNS services for host or URI routes will likely not resolve for inbound call delivery.
What may be impacted by an attack like this is our support ticketing system, slowing down how quickly we can respond to you. When this happens your best plan of action is to give us a call directly so we can help you get back on track.
Get back up and running
If you are using DynDNS to resolve public host names or SIP URI routes for inbound calls, you can remedy the situation by changing your domains to IP or switch to a DNS server, like Google, that is currently up and running.
If your DIDs (phone numbers) use DynDNS resolved hostnames for either host or SIP URI routes, please update them to use an IP address instead until the DDoS attacks have been mitigated on DynDNS.
